We’re catching up with Inspired Retreat Alumni Serena Waller of Delegate & Elevate! Serena attended Inspired Retreat in the Spring of 2018 and used the retreat as a way to inspire her goal of growing her business. Let’s see how things have changed since Inspired Retreat, and hear some of Serena’s business wisdom in her own words!
Where were you in your business journey when making the decision to attend Inspired?
Stuck! I knew I was ready to "level up" but I was too busy working IN the business. I needed accountability, motivation, inspiration and guidance.
Knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself on Day 1 of starting your creative business?
This is YOUR business and you are 100% allowed to run it the way that works for you. Don't let the pressure of your past dictate your future. You're the boss, you call the shots.
What is one action item from your Inspired Retreat experience that has changed your business and/or mindset?
Thinking (and planning) BIGGER.
With the abundance of noteworthy creative workshops offered, why would you recommend Inspired Retreat over another?
It is intimate, action oriented and FULL of seriously amazing encouragers.
How has your investment in Inspired Retreat paid off for you and your business?
In so many ways! I am finally charging what I'm worth and I'm focusing on what WORKS in my business. I am allowing myself to say no more often. I'm also starting another business!
What is one thing you have implemented that has helped you to streamline or help manage your creative business and family/personal priorities?
I finally got the guts to hire someone!
What things do you do to stay creative/be inspired?
Travel, read, spend time as a family unit. Head out for a little pampering as often as possible!
What is your daily routine like?
It varies! But when things are "ideal", the look like this: During the school year, I get up when my son gets up. We spend time snuggling and chatting, eating breakfast and then getting ready for school. I drop him off at 9am and then head to my favorite local coffee shop. I work there until his school day is over around 2pm. We go get a snack or lunch, then play for the afternoon.
Around 4-5pm, little gets some TV time while hubby & I workout together for 30-45 minutes. Then I start making dinner while my son has dude time. We eat as a family, then it's bath, reading, bed. After that, I usually work for another 2-3 hours on the couch. Once I get in bed, I usually read a mystery novel or business book for 30 minutes to an hour.
During the summer it is ALL over the place, but it's fair to say that it is family time for the waking hours and work time during the sleeping hours. However, my husband is also self employed, so we will often split our days for parenting duty so the other can work.
What is your favorite business book, magazine, or podcast?
So many good ones! For books, "You are a Badass" has been my favorite so far! For podcasts, I love Kristin Kaplan's planning for profit. And magazines, Real Simple.
So, what's next for you?
I am starting a secondary business to compliment my existing business and to generate more passive income. My hope is that I am able to travel more and really embrace the CEO mentality.
