Today is Monday and we are so happy to talk to Valerie Painter of Love Greyson Events for this week's #InspiredMakerMonday! Valerie is a wedding and event designer based in Michigan and she gets to work with flowers for a living. Read on to find out more of what Valerie has been doing since she attended Inspired Retreat.
When did you attend Inspired Retreat? Fall 2014
Where were you in your business journey when making the decision to attend Inspired? I was juggling too many hats and confused on my direction of where I wanted to take my brand. I needed to learn from some of the best in the industry that I loved up to and valued.
Knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself on Day 1 of starting your creative business? We all have a different journey that defines how we get to our happy place in the end. It's not fair to compare your beginning to someone else's middle, we all grow at different strides and that's what makes this adventure of being a business owner beautiful. Give yourself more grace.
What is one action item from your Inspired Retreat experience that has changed your business and/or mindset? Getting a clear understanding of what makes you tick and what you're good at, and forget the rest. You can't do it all. I realized I didn't have a passion for graphic design anymore, it was just another headache. So I ditched that service and stuck with the things I loved and those things bring me such joy!
With the abundance of noteworthy creative workshops offered, why would you recommend Inspired Retreat over another? I would recommend Inspired because of it's amazing variety of speakers and topics. Also, because of the intimacy it offers, you are getting your money's worth when you invest. It's a great investment, you won't be let down!
What is one thing you have implemented that has helped you to streamline or help manage your creative business and family/personal priorities? When I had my 3rd child last summer I knew it would be a challenge. I decided early on when I was going to return to work I would hire someone to take the kids 1-2 days a week. That way I could get out of the house and meet with clients, run business errands or even lunch dates. This allowed me to be the best mom and wife I knew how by allowing myself some time to refresh and focus without piles of dishes or laundry in sight.
What things do you do to stay creative/be inspired? I attend inspiring workshops, make a floral arrangement on my terms to practice and design how I want to. Also, reading or listening to inspirational things that lift me up and add value to my life. Lastly, I stay off social media more and find inspiration in other unusual places.
What is your daily routine like? I wake up and workout before the kids wake up. I read the bible and then have breakfast. I get the kids up and I check email while they are getting breakfast, and then get them out the door for school. I entertain my 11-month-old until her morning nap. When she naps, it's power time to work on client events, social media, blog stuff, etc. I use this time for my business only. After nap time it's usually time for lunch. After lunch I usually clean while entertaining the baby. Around 2:45pm I leave to pick up my son from school. When we get home I may sit to do some multitasking for 30 mins until my daughter gets home. After that, I prepare dinner and wind down. When summer happens all of this goes out the window :), but that is why I have hired help weekly so I can catch a break and do business!
What is your favorite business book, magazine, or podcast? I love Making Things Happen by Lara Casey. My favorite magazine is Martha Stewart Weddings for sure.
So, what's next for you? Continuing to work and strengthening my relationships with local vendors and friends, streamlining my business to make it easier and growing upward not outward. Also, really discovering who I am and what I am called to do in life, while sharing my story. Continuing to grow as a multi-faceted business owner while inspiring others to believe too.
Thanks so much Valerie, for sharing with us! Keep up with Valerie on Instagram!
